Intersectionality recognises that each person carries multiple identities and experiences that intersect and interact with one another. As a non-binary individual, I navigate the complexities of gender identity while also grappling with various other social identities, such as my race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability, socioeconomic status, and more. These intersecting identities shape my experiences, privileges, and challenges in distinct ways.
I am British-born and Pakistani, and luckily, having lived in London for the most of my adult life, I found a group of friends and allies who champion my voice regardless of my background. However, now that I have moved to a seaside town in Kent, the sense of alienation due to being different is more pronounced. It is crucial to recognise the significance of racial and ethnic identities within the non-binary community and explore the difficulties that individuals experience both at work and outside.

The topic of sexual orientation can sometimes lead to confusion when addressing the non-binary community. In my own experience, I date individuals of all genders, and my current partner is a cisgender male who uses he/him pronouns. I often encounter questions like, "How does this work?" or notice the perplexed expressions of others.
Recently, during a conversation, I had the opportunity to shift the perspectives of some individuals. I explained that while my assigned sex at birth is female, my gender identity is non- binary. I further elaborated that I do not conform to societal expectations of what is considered masculine or feminine. Instead, I embrace aspects of both and find comfort in this fluidity. Fortunately, my partner accepts and supports my non-binary identity.
By sharing this insight, I was able to transform an uncomfortable encounter into a positive interaction. It allowed me to challenge preconceived notions and open up a dialogue about the complexity and diversity of sexual orientations and gender identities. The experience served as a reminder that sharing our unique journey can foster understanding and acceptance, creating more inclusive spaces for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
I personally navigate the challenges of stammering and ADHD, the latter of which includes hyper-sensitivity. These are labels that I am currently adjusting to and understanding more deeply. Initially, I didn't think these aspects related directly to my gender identity. However, as I delve into the experiences of individuals with ADHD, I came to understand how the community faces societal shame for their differences. This realisation has shed light on how I have experienced shame for not having fluid speech or for not conforming to traditional feminine expectations. It has been an eye-opening journey to discover the interconnectedness of it all.
Throughout my childhood, I held a steadfast ambition to attend university. Growing up as the child of immigrants in a post-industrial town with a struggling educational reputation, pursuing higher education seemed like an unattainable dream. However, at the age of twenty-five, I was able to make that wish a reality, I went to attain a degree followed by a master's program. Navigating through the spaces in which privilege can be thrusted in your face these collective experiences have given me a unique outlook so that we can bring people closer together by sharing our experiences.

As the chair of the Gender Network at a large social housing provider, I am dedicated to advocating for the elimination of the Gender Pay Gap and it's crucial to understand that these labels, such as disability tax, ethnicity tax, and gender tax, shed light on the different issues that individuals face and how they impact our earnings. It is important to reflect on how these labels may contribute to a reduction in our pay. Let us encourage open dialogue and advocate for justice.
Embracing intersectional non-binary identity is an ongoing journey of self-discovery and understanding. By acknowledging and celebrating the multiple labels we carry, we can build a more inclusive and empowering community. Let us embrace our unique intersectional experiences, uplift marginalised voices, and work together to create a world where all non-binary individuals can live authentically and without compromise.
